THE THREE PARTS THAT MAKE UP A SEPTIC SYSTEM
- The septic tank – Its main purpose is to separate solids from waste water and to store and decompose as many solid matter as possible.
- The drain field – This is designed to allow waste water to be absorbed throughout an area.
- The soil – This is the final treatment area of the system. The soil, along with organisms, treats the waste water before it is absorbed into the surrounding area.
A system that is not maintained can cost homeowners thousands of dollars in repairs. The most important step is to remove the sludge and scum build-up before it is carried into the drain field. Septic system treatments or additives are not necessary and should not take place of a tank cleaning. A general rule of thumb is to pump the tank every 3–5 years.
